ERIK NITSCHE (1908-1998) [HISTORICAL SUBMARINES.] Circa 1958. 15 1/4x35 1/2 inches, 38 3/4x90 1/4 cm. Roto-Sadag, Geneva. Condition A / A-: minor restoration in lower right image. Nitsche is best remembered for his series of 29 posters for General Dynamics, where he served as Art Director between 1955 and 1960. He also designed the 1958 tour de force Dynamic America, a book about the history of General Dynamics, which featured inserts, fold outs and a dynamic design and layout all of its own. In the section on submarines, on pages 55 and 56, Nitsche arrays ten cut-a-way, schematic views of historical submarines between the years 1850 and 1896. Presumably this larger format (which omits three of the images from the book) was printed to be used as some form of exhibition display. Roto-Sadag was also one of the companies involved in printing Dynamic America.
